About Orthodoxy

The Orthodox Church has been around for over 2,000 years. It is the Church which our Lord, Jesus Christ, spoke of when He promised that it will never fall into Hell (cf. Matthew 16:18). The Orthodox Church started all the way back at Pentecost (cf. Acts 2). This Church then continues to this day, and is fulfilled in the Orthodox Church.

This ancient Faith which the Orthodox Church adheres to comes all the way back from the Apostles, handed down to the early Church through the early Church Fathers. This is the Faith we attest to, adhered to by the Patriarchs, bishops, clergy and Orthodox faithful.

This ancient Faith adhered to by the Orthodox Church comes down to us through the sacred and holy Traditions, and of Scripture. We affirm that Sacred Tradition and Scripture go together, complementing each other.

We affirm as well the Holy Mysteries, which we celebrate together with the whole Church. Through it the life of the Orthodox Christian is nourished and lived. These Holy Mysteries are Baptism, Chrismation, Holy Eucharist, Confession, Holy Orders, Matrimony, and Holy Unction.

This living, vibrant faith is of course not only nourished in Scripture, Tradition and the Holy Mysteries, but it is lived. The Orthodox faithful are encouraged to live out their faith in orthopraxis, or the realization of that faith into action through the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, as well as obedience to Christ and to His Church. This praxis, lived out well, should lead one to theosis, or one being made perfect as to be like unto God Himself.
